The Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC) Diagnostic Laboratory has an immediate opening for a fulltime Molecular Laboratory Technologist. The position will be located in the Greenwood GGC Diagnostic Laboratory and will work with a team of Molecular Directors and PhD faculty, laboratory technologists and support personnel.

The primary responsibilities of the Molecular Technologist may include using standard molecular techniques such as PCR, Sanger or Pyrosequencing, restriction enzyme digestion, fragment analysis, Southern blotting, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA), and Next Generation Sequencing (DNA/RNA) to analyze clinical diagnostic samples that are submitted for laboratory analysis. The technologist will follow standard operating procedures for sample handling, sample processing, test analyses, and recording of test results, and will adhere to the quality control policies of the laboratory. When appropriate, the technologist may be responsible for training of other technologists/fellows/students, and participate in the maintenance of laboratory equipment. The Molecular Technologist will report to the Molecular Supervisor and Molecular Lab Director(s).

The Greenwood Genetic Center has an immediate opening for an Application Specialist. The primary responsibilities for this position will be to enable automation of lab workflow tasks, integration of diagnostic data from separate database applications & electronic communication and compatibility amongst various software systems and instrumentation in our Diagnostic Laboratory.

The Applications Specialist will play a key role in advancing efforts to modernize the different aspects of managing clinical information, test results and documentation required for regulatory compliance. The Specialist will be integral in the design, configuration and installation of interfaces to systems within the laboratory. In collaboration with our IT and Bioinformatics team, the Specialist will ensure viable database designs with seamless execution and transition into the laboratory environment.

Experience with application development, database design and interface creation is essential. An understanding of clinical laboratory workflow is desired, but not required for this position. A degree in Computer Science, IT or related area with an emphasis in programming and at least two years of professional experience is required.

The Greenwood Genetic Center has an immediate opening for a full-time staff scientist in our Clinical Biochemical Genetics Laboratory.The position will focus on the measurement of metabolites associated with diagnosis and treatment of human genetic disorders with an emphasis on lysosomal storage disorders using tandem mass spectrometry. The scientist will be responsible for new test development and overseeing assay validations. Additional responsibilities include participation in the general maintenance and oversight of MS/MS technology and the development and submission of peer-reviewed manuscripts for his/her work.

Experience with quantitative measurement of organic compounds using LC-MS/MS is required. A B.S. degree is required and an M.S. or Ph.D. degree is preferred.

A staff scientist position is available in the Research Division at the Greenwood Genetic Center to pursue research studies on inherited metabolic disorders and to perform functional studies on newly identified genetic variants. This scientist will also help oversee and coordinate advanced tissue culture activity and specific analytical methods. A Ph.D. degree in a biological science major, a minimum of 2 years postdoctoral experience, and a proven research track record in genetics, biochemistry, cell biology and/or molecular biology are required. Expertise in mammalian cell culture and the ability to work independently and effectively troubleshoot experiments is necessary.

The Bioinformatics Analyst will be expected to assist the Bioinformatics Specialist team perform detailed analysis of Next-Generation Sequencing data in both a research and diagnostic setting. Fluency in several programming languages, along with a well-rounded knowledge of genetics/molecular biology, is essential in order to understand and communicate findings/results. Collaboration with additional individuals including Clinical Laboratory Directors is also essential to providing the most informative and concise results. The Bioinformatics Analyst must also be able to adapt their skill set to accommodate for technological advances and a steadily increasing volume of high-throughput data.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or related field is required
  • At least 2 years of related experience is preferred
  • Fluency in Python, JAVA, R, or C++ is required
  • Database experience is preferred
  • Understanding of Biology and Genetics is preferred

The Greenwood Genetic Center has an opening for a part-time bus driver for the Mobile Genetics Lab. The Mobile Genetics Lab, also known as the Gene Machine, is a 41 foot custom coach equipped as a mobile science laboratory. The Gene Machine allows students to engage in fun, entertaining and educational scenarios where they have the opportunity to learn about genetic traits and disorders, understand the lab techniques used in making a diagnosis as well as consider the ethical implications of testing and explore careers in the life sciences. The successful candidate would travel with a team of Genetic Education Instructors.

The primary responsibilities include driving the Mobile Genetics Lab within South Carolina, completing forms and records related to Mobile Lab operations, functions and maintenance and working cooperatively with students, school system personnel, GGC employees and the general public. The applicant must demonstrate knowledge of bus operations and equipment, motor vehicle laws and safety standards. Assignments will be rotated with one additional driver on the team.

Candidates must possess and maintain DOT medical certification and a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with an excellent driving record. Graduation from high school, with experience in bus or similar vehicle operation, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide knowledge, skills and abilities of demonstrated, substantive experience in the operation of large buses required. Ability to travel within South Carolina with some overnight assignments is required.

Additional Requirements: Ability to sit, drive and maneuver long-wheel-based vehicles for extended periods of time. Considerable ability to lend assistance to passengers with disabilities; ability to provide lifting/moving assistance to disabled persons (some wheelchair- bound) as they are boarding or deboarding the bus.

Schedule: Traveling approximately two weeks per month (4 days per week).

The Greenwood Genetic Center has an immediate opening for a fulltime Board Certified/Board Eligible Biochemical Geneticist at the Assistant or Associate Level. The position is located in the Columbia office of the Greenwood Genetic Center and will have an emphasis on the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with inborn errors of metabolism requiring dietary treatment as well as enzyme replacement therapy. There will be the opportunity to participate in teaching and clinical research. The successful candidate is also expected to participate in the on call schedule for patients with biochemical disorders.

The responsibilities of the position include patient care (inpatient consultations, outpatient metabolic genetics clinic and newborn screen consultation); collaboration with GGC biochemical genetics laboratory; and teaching of genetic counselors, USC medical students and residents. The qualified candidate will be offered a faculty position with USC at rank commensurate with their qualifications.
